![]() ![]() They’re also multi-generational, spanning decades. The stories are rich in detail and inter-connecting back stories with a heavy cast of characters. ![]() This is not a series that you can follow without having read each book. While I loved all six books in the series, book 5, Queen of Swords, is my ultimate favourite. ![]() They were, of course, definitely worth the wait! There are six books in total and the series is now finished with all titles available in gorgeous matching covers. I was over-joyed to see the promo for the second instalment advertised in the back cover, less so when I realised I would have to wait two years for it, and for each one thereafter. To my utter delight, Into the Wilderness proved itself a most enjoyable read, containing all of the necessary ingredients required for a good historical fiction with romantic elements. But even back then I loved historical fiction, as my friend well knew, and thick books had never put me off either. I’d never heard of Sara Donati before, nor had I heard of Diana Gabaldon, whose high praise on the cover conveyed much about this mystery book’s contents. I received the first book in The Wilderness Series, Into the Wilderness, as a thank you gift from a friend. ![]()

![]() ![]() Next, Wilson looks at the mysteries of Dickens’ parents-his problematic relationship with his father and his fraught feelings toward his mother-and how the depiction of childhood in his fiction reflects an ideal rather than a reality. “Dickens, as an actor and a novelist, and as a man, was a man of masks,” Wilson suggests, “who probably never revealed himself to anyone quite conceivably, he did not reveal himself to himself.” The rich narrative begins with Dickens’ ultimate public deception: Even in the throes of death from a stroke in June 1870, he diligently kept the existence of his long-term extramarital relationship with actress Nelly Ternan from the adoring eyes of the public. Rather than providing a straightforward, linear biography, Wilson explores Dickens’ life and work through the prism of seven “mysteries” that shaped the elusive writer. Wilson, the celebrated British biographer of many eminent Victorians (including Queen Victoria herself), now lends his expertise and singular perspective in The Mystery of Charles Dickens. Is there room on the shelf for another book about Charles Dickens? The great novelist has been endlessly scrutinized by critics and biographers, bowdlerized on stage and screen, and lionized by generations of readers since his death 150 years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What he finds out instead is that there are just as many crazies outside the walls of a cultist tower as there are inside. But if they read this book, they might be won over. Some parents may not agree that their little ones are ready to experience full-strength Grimm (let alone Shakespeare, as Gidwitz’s students have done). And although the narrator often pulls the reader aside and begs him to make sure there are no small children in the room to hear the tale, the entire book demonstrates an amazing faith in kids’ guts, brains, and hearts-not only that they can understand and appreciate such strong stuff, but that they are brave enough to take it, worthy to enjoy it, and keen to learn from it. This book is what happens when a New York City schoolteacher stitches together nine fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm to form one coherent story-while, at the same time, restoring much of the original versions’ weird, scary, and bloody bits. ![]() ![]() ![]() He was a talented all round sports manĪnd a qualified sole glider pilot at the age of 18.
