![]() ![]() ![]() Trauma has long been the study of doctors and psychologists, but only recently has it begun to migrate into the humanities. Clifton has said she was "fortunate" to have "discovered was tough" (Troupe), and one of the ways she proves this again and again is by addressing such hardships bravely through her poetry. ![]() In a life full of grief and loss-the premature death of two of her six children, her mother's death at age 44, her husband's death at age 49, her multiple struggles with cancer and kidney failure (Troupe)-one of the topics upon which Clifton's heart spoke often was the sexual abuse she experienced as a child at the hands of her father (Fox).
